Semester I- Mid February- Late June, 2008
Semester II- Late July - Late November, 2008
Griffith University is in Queensland, Australia, the "Sunshine State." Queensland is the most northern state on Australia's east coast with a landscape ranging from outback deserts to lush topical rainforests and coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. Queensland has an average of 300 days of sunshine a year and a warm climate, its no wonder that it has earned the nickname the "Sunshine State".

The capital of Queensland, Brisbane, is located in the south-east corner of the state and is a modern vibrant city with the perfect mix of city life and relaxed outdoor opportunities. Brisbane regularly hosts national and international cultural and sporting events including the recent 2001 Goodwill Games. One hour south of Brisbane is the Gold Coast, famous for its miles of surfing beaches and hinterland rainforest and considered "Australia's playground".
Griffith University was founded in 1975 and took the name of a visionary Queenslander: Sir Samuel Griffith. A former Queensland Premier and the first Chief Justice of Australia, Samuel Griffith's spirit of innovation and leadership continues today at the university that bears his name. Griffith University is one of the most progressive and distinctive in the Southern Hemisphere. Griffith has more the 26,000 students, including 3,600 international students, and more than 140 undergraduate degree programs on six campuses from Brisbane to the Gold Coast. Griffith takes a multidisciplinary approach to teaching, using the newest methods available.
Students studying at Griffith University through Mason's program will take classes at the Nathan Campus just outside of Brisbane and the campuses nearby.
Students take 3 or 4 courses at Griffith per semester to be considered full time. Each class is usually worth 10 credit points and will transfer back to Mason as a 4 credit class for a total of 12-16 transfer credits. Students studying for a semester MUST only take classes at the Nathan main campus. Students studying for a year should contact the Program Officer for other possible options.
Classes are taught Monday-Friday through a mixture of lectures and tutorials. Lectures are just like they sound- large classes in which the professor lectures the students. During the smaller tutorials you will have the chance to voice your opinion in a small group of students as you discuss the topics covered in the lecture. Though the tutorials are generally informal and laid-back, they are where you will submit assignments and give presentations as required by your class.
The method of grading at Griffith is similar to that of Mason and other US institutions. Professors may take into account class attendance, oral presentations (in tutorials), group or individual assignments, exams and quizzes when determining your grade.
Courses are available in many departments, including:

Students have the opportunity to apply for on campus housing in one of the Residential Colleges at the Nathan Campus. All students will have single rooms in shared, fully-furnished apartments that have a common area, kitchen and bathroom. All rooms have a phone line and ethernet (if you bring a computer).
The Colleges are situated close to a range of University facilities, including computer labs, gymnasiums, tracks, swimming pool, squash, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, general store, a range of food outlets, newsagent, post office, credit union, medical centre, hairdresser and travel agent. Living on campus is also a great way to meet Australians.
Students also have the opportunity to live with an Australian family for the semester. This is a great way to meet Australians and get a deeper insight into Australian culture. Students will have some meals with their host families.
This program is open to Mason students ONLY. Students must be at least a second semester sophomore by the time of departure and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Students should not study abroad the last semester of their senior year if they plan to graduate on time.
Program Fee $14,950* at the Nathan Campus, $9,700 at the Gold Coast (does not include housing or meals)
*This fee includes a $420 refundable housing security deposit. Deposit will be returned to the student after the completion of the program if no damage is done to assigned housing.
