THIS PROGRAM IS CLOSED TO NEW ENROLLMENT

Dates

June 30 - July 19, 2008 (followed by London Week July 19 - 25, 2008)

DESCRIPTION

The Oxford University International Summer Schools Programs will offer students to study in one of two programs: History, Politics, and Society, and English Literature. These courses are an intense three-week, six credit academic program, followed by a week in London. The program involves substantial reading before the program begins and a rigorous academic schedule while in Oxford. The academic program lasts three weeks, during which time you will live in Exeter College residence hall. Exeter College is one of Oxford's oldest colleges and is situated in the heart of Oxford.

The Summer Program in History, Politics and Society provides insight into issues and events that have shaped the contemporary world. The program is designed to combine detailed analysis with a broad overview, and consists of study in small seminar groups with a specialist tutor; and a more general daily lecture program given by leading scholars and distinguished speakers.

Examples of course topics include: Empire in the Twentieth Century; Europe during the Cold War; The Harp and the Crown; Middle East and the European Union in Perspective.

Participants normally take two courses. Each course consists of seminars which meet twice a week for two hours. Classes are kept small, and will usually contain no more than 12 participants. This small-group teaching is a special feature of University of Oxford programs. In addition to taking part in the seminars, participants attend the daily plenary lectures.

The Summer Program in English Literature provides access to a variety of significant literary figures and movements, and offers insights into seven centuries of English Literature. The program is designed to combine detailed analysis with a broad overview, and consists of study in small seminar groups with a specialist tutor; and a more general daily lecture program given by leading scholars and distinguished speakers.

Examples of course topics include: Chaucer, Shakespeare, Romantic poetry, Austen, Victorian women`s writing, high Victorian fiction and Modernist fiction.

During London Week you will spend one week of free, unstructured time exploring the city at your leisure. You will be housed in a furnished apartment. You are responsible for paying for meals and entertainment. The London Week is not affiliated with Oxford University. This is an added benefit provided by CGE.
