Ireland: Field Study in Communication and Journalism

DESCRIPTION

This two-week course will explore various aspects of intercultural communication and international journalism, with emphasis placed on the global and intercultural aspects of journalism practices. This course aims to introduce students to approaches and practices that can guide or explain journalistic success and failure in the 21st century. Subjects include reporting in a foreign environment, media literacy, 24/7 coverage, big-event coverage, hyper-local coverage, and the oppertunities of working with multimedia accross platforms. Additionally, students will visit national media organizations and experience a range of real media challenges.

The course will be based in Sligo, the second largest city in Connaught in northwest Ireland. Students will have the opportunity to meet with various Irish media outlets, talk with Irish journalists and media professionals, including the Sligo Champion. In addition, students will travel to Dublin and Belfast in Northern Ireland to meet with communications professionals as well as visit historical and cultural sites of interest.

ELIGIBILITY

The program is open to George Mason University and non-GMU students of all levels, staff, faculty, and alumni, as well as the general public. To obtain credit, you need at least a 2.25 GPA.

COST

Program Fee: Approx. $3,688 (Approx. $3,738 for non GMU students) (minimum 15 participants)

Center for Global Education - Mason Abroad reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

CGE reserves the right to raise its program fees in light of currency fluctuations or any other unforeseen circumstances.

Participants who submit a completed application (Center for Global Education - Mason Abroad application and all required application materials) by a certain date will receive a $100 discount off the program fee.
