DESCRIPTION

"In the beginning was the word", wrote the Greek mystic John of Ephesus. This class explores the role of speech in the philosophical, political and religious thought of the ancient Greek world. John's use of the idea of the word to relate to god came out of traditions that countered the possible violence of the gods—exemplified in the behavior of the Homeric gods. This class explores the tensions in Ancient Greek thought between the responsibilities and demands for a social world created through violence and the possibility that speech could provide an alternative form of non-violent warfare. Our understanding of attempts by the Ancient Greeks to reorganize the world on the basis of debate and language instead of physical contestation will be facilitated by the course readings, an examination of the classic art, an appraisal of the architecture of Athens, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi, Attica, Crete, Ephesus, Troy, Pergamum, Kusadasi, Aphrodisian, Pamukkale, and Istanbul.

ELIGIBILITY

The program is open to George Mason University and non-Mason students of all levels, staff, faculty, and alumni, as well as the general public. To obtain credit, you need at least a 2.25 GPA.

COST

Program Fee: $3,720 ($3,770 for Non Mason Students)

The fee includes:

• Travel guidebooks for Greece and Turkey

The fee does NOT include:

• Round-trip international airfare between Washington, D.C. and Greece/Turkey
• Drinks and beverages during any planned group meal
• Tips to guides and servers
• Personal expenses of any nature
• Textbooks
• Mandatory health insurance that will cover you overseas
• Port taxes in Turkey (about $10 per person)

Center for Global Education - Mason Abroad reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

Participants who submit a completed application (Center for Global Education - Mason Abroad application and all required application materials) by September 14, 2007 will receive a $100 discount off the program fee.
