The Academic Experience
Founded in 1878, Lady Margaret Hall made it possible for the first time for women to study at Oxford, with all that meant both for intellectual development and for access to new career opportunities. It is named in honour of Lady Margaret Beaufort, founder of the Tudor dynasty and renowned patron of scholarship and learning.
Participants interested in this program need to have high academic aspirations and be intellectually ambitious. At Lady Margaret Hall each Visiting Student is assigned a Personal Tutor in his or her subject area who helps the student to organise a program of study. Like other Oxford undergraduates, Visiting Students are taught in tutorials, normally one to three students regularly meeting with a Tutor (usually the equivalent of an Americanprofessor). The session with the Tutor involves discussion of the assignment and personalised feedback on the student’s work. During tutorials students are expected to do substantial independent library work and periodically produce written essays, oral presentations, or prepare problem sets. Since the instruction is individualized, Oxford does not have a course catalogue.
Participants spend one year alongside Oxford undergraduates in Lady Margaret Hall. Participants study the same subjects, often sharing tutorials with Oxford students. Their academic experience will closely resemble the experience of an Oxford second year undergraduate. Oxford has a three year undergraduate degree program.
Participants in this program must take two tutorials that satisfy the George Mason University two-course requirement in Gender Studies--Introduction to Women and Gender Studies and Feminist Theory (interdisciplinary). The remaining four tutorials can be focused on topics related to the major program. These tutorials must also relate to issues of gender.
Refer to the LMH website for courses for further information on tutorial topics available. It is your responsiblity to write your tutorial descriptions adding in the gender issue you wish to explore.
Final acceptance decisions are made by the college and may take up to 8 weeks from time of application.
Participation in this program requires pre-clearance from the George Mason University Women and Gender Studies program.
