New Faculty Publications
Dr. Tony Yang's paper paper "Relationship Between Malpractice Pressure and Rates of Cesarean Section and VBAC" has just been accepted for publication in Medical Care.
Dr. Jack Hadley's article, " Covering The Uninsured In 2008: Current Costs, Sources Of Payment, And Incremental Costs", has been accepted for publication by Health Affairs and will be released as a web exclusive on June 24th.

Jack Hadley has received notice of preliminary manuscript acceptance from the journal "Health Affairs". The article he co-authored will be on estimating the cost of covering the uninsured.
Health Systems Management Student Receives National Scholarship Award
Sarah Lash, graduate Health Systems Management Health Policy student, has been selected as a David A. Winston Health Policy Scholarship recipient. Sarah is one of ten students nationwide to receive this award based on her academic scholarship in pursuit of a career in health policy. Read more about Sarah.
2008 Improvement of the Year Awards

The Department of Health Administration and Policy in the College
of Health and Human Services announced four winners of its annual Improvement
of the Year Award at a banquet on April 24.
This competitive award was created to recognize teams from mid-Atlantic
health organizations that have significantly improved the quality of
care in their hospitals or health care systems. This year, 21 projects
were submitted. Read

A new Certificate Program and Graduate Concentration in Risk Management and Patient Safety has been approved.
HAP Faculty Receives Research Award
HAP Faculty Jack Hadley has received funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study "High-Cost Medicare Beneficiaries: The Roles of Physician Practice and Health System Factors". The goal of this research is to identify physician practice and market characteristics that contribute to high Medicare costs by analyzing care delivered to high-cost beneficiaries. Since the costliest 25 percent of Medicare beneficiaries account for 85 percent of total spending, even modest improvements in the cost effectiveness of their care would have significant fiscal benefits.
HAP Post-Doc Receives Award
Janusz Wojtusiak, post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Health
Administration and Policy, received the best poster presentation award
at the Sixth International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications
in Cincinnati, OH, December 13-15, 2007, for the paper "The Natural
Induction System AQ21 and Its Application to Data Describing Patients
with Metabolic Syndrome: Initial Results." The paper authored
by Janusz Wojtusiak, Ryszard Michalski, Thipkesone Simanivanh, and
Anna Baranova is available from the website of the GMU Machine Learning
and Inference Laboratory (www.mli.gmu.edu),
which has recently moved to the Department of Health Administration
and Policy.
HAP Faculty publishes article on Medicaid Reimbursement
HAP Faculty Dr. Farrokh Alemi co-authored an article with Kathy Fornilli.
The article, "Medicaid Reimbursement for Screening and Brief Intervention:
Amending the Medicaid State Plan and Approving State Appropriations
for the Medicaid State Match" was recently published in the Journal
of Addictions Nursing.

Andy Carle discusses marketing campaigns that target the aging baby boomer
population, and the impact of technology evolution on society in Part
II and Part
III of this Tech Series.
