Amy Cavazos

cavazosFor Amy Cavazos, being at Mason is a full-time job. Literally. She is an administrative assistant with the Initiatives in Educational Transformation program at Mason in addition to working to complete her master’s degree in education with a concentration in early childhood education.

When Cavazos graduates this May, she hopes teach in Virginia. “I would like to use my degree to help young children and their families to learn, engage with others, and develop to their fullest potential,” she said.  “I want to help individuals empower themselves to use their knowledge to seize every opportunity to enrich their lives.”

Cavazos earned the Tom Haggai and Associates Foundation Scholarship in Elementary Education. This award helped her to avoid incurring additional debt by covering her books and other expenses after she recovered from a serious illness and while she completed an unpaid internship.
“Words cannot express how grateful I am for the opportunity this scholarship afforded me,” said Cavazos. “I was able to go back to school at mid-life and complete a master’s degree without any loans. My goal one day is to give back to Mason so that another individual in a similar position can have that same gift.”

In addition to her upcoming MEd, Cavazos holds a BA in music from West Virginia University and MA in music from the University of Maryland at College Park.

About the Scholarship

Created by Dr. Thomas Haggai in the fall of 2001, the Tom Haggai and Associates (THA) Foundation Scholarship was designed to support non-traditional (or career switcher) students who demonstrate a dedication and commitment to teaching in grades K-6.  As a recipient of various scholarships and grants to fund his education, Dr. Haggai appreciated that he had been able to graduate from college without financial debt. In creating the THA Foundation, he hoped to pass on the same kindness he had experienced.
