Paulina Noel
As a single mother returning to the work force after many years, Paulina Noel needed her undergraduate degree in order to be competitive in the tough job market. However, finding the financial means to finish her education and still support herself and her daughter proved to be a challenge.
Fortunately, Noel was able to receive assistance from two Mason scholarships, the Mark and Catherine Winkler Single Parent Endowed Scholarship and the Dr. Lucille G. Shandloff Memorial Endowed Scholarship. The funds helped cover a large part of her tuition and assisted with the cost of books and other expenses.
Now, Noel is hard at work at Mason, focusing on her degree in sociology and a minor in immigration studies. She expects to graduate in spring 2012 and hopes to use her degree to contribute to her Loudoun County community. She also plans to pursue graduate studies and ultimately explore the legal aspects of immigration reform both locally and on a larger scale.
“I could not realize my dream [of finishing school] without the scholarship funds that I have been awarded,” Noel explains. “I am so grateful for the opportunity, and it encourages me to complete what I've started no matter how difficult it is at times. The support helps me to focus on my studies without the distraction of financial concern.”
About the Scholarships
The Mark and Catherine Winkler Single Parent Endowed Scholarship was established in 1987 through the Mark and Catherine Winkler Foundation to provide assistance for single parents to reach their educational goals.
The Dr. Lucille G. Shandloff Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 1995 to help single parents acquire educational qualifications to enter or return to the workforce in education, counseling, publishing, or related fields. Dr. Shandloff’s son, David, and daughter, Nina, created the endowment in her memory.
