Outright Gifts
When most people think of giving, they probably think of outright gifts. These gifts come to Mason in a few different ways:
Credit Card or Check
If you would like to write a check, please make it payable to the George Mason University Foundation, Inc., to ensure deductibility. The Foundation also accepts Visa and MasterCard through give.gmu.edu.
Appreciated Securities
These gifts, whether from a publicly traded or private company, may provide you with enhanced tax benefits, particularly if the transfer is done electronically. The Mason Foundation’s broker gives a substantial brokerage discount on the sale of donated securities.
Step 1: You can instruct your broker to make the transfer to:

Step 2: Ask your broker to notify Rudra Zutshi when the transfer takes place by calling 301-279-6426 or e-mailing rudra.zutshi@morganstanleygraystone.com. (If necessary, the mailing address Rudra Zutshi, Graystone Consulting, 12505 Park Potomac Avenue, Suite 420, Potomac, MD 20854, and the fax number is 301-279-6444)
Step 3: Notify Susan Van Leunen with the Mason Foundation of the following:
- name of your broker's company
- type of stock our broker should expect
- number of shares being transferred
- approximate date of expected transfer
- purpose of the gift within the university

Personal Property
Gifts of tangible personal property may provide you with immediate tax advantages. Your gift must relate directly to Mason's activities and mission. Contact us for more information.
Real Estate
Your real estate gift provides you with a tax deduction, avoids capital gains taxes, and, in some instances, permits lifetime residence. You may contribute real property as an outright gift, a gift with retained life tenancy, or an asset given with retained life income. Contact us for more information.
