Corporate Leaders Discuss Partnerships That Work
Corporate grant makers around the country remain cautious in their commitment to increase their funding in 2010. In a special briefing held at Mason on March 29 and moderated by Dean Jorge Haddock of the School of Management, representatives from Capital One and Cox Communications provided new insights into the current state of corporate philanthropy, including how to strengthen partnerships with corporations and community organizations.
Leigh Woisard, vice president of public affairs for Cox Communications in Virginia, noted that her company receives thousands of requests from worthy causes that are aligned with the company’s focus on kids and education. Cox’s family-run business supports organizations that offer unique, multi-dimensional programs and services.
Woisard discussed the Cox Connects Kids program, which links children to educational opportunities by partnering with local stores. Retail partners provide computers, while Cox provides half-price broadband service to eligible participants, who are identified by school administrators through the free-and-reduced-lunch program.
Daniel Horgan, director of community affairs at Capital One, emphasized the opportunity for innovation in programming within the current economic environment. While Capital One has not increased their funding this year, Horgan said the company is not cutting back its support to current partners. He noted that Capital One seeks reciprocal relationships with nonprofits, where the company can commit not only money but Capital One employees’ expertise and time.
“We can’t be a mile wide,” explained Horgan, but the company can be “devastatingly local” with its philanthropy.
