Dr. Birchard’s research interests are in comparative physiology. In particular the areas of vertebrate and insect cardiorespiratory physiology and developmental physiology are a major focus. He has particular interests in the relationships between gas exchange and growth rates in amniote embryos, diffusional gas exchange in insects and patterns of scaling of physiological processes. He has served as a program officer at the National Science Foundation and a visiting researcher at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Dr. Birchard also serves as a pre-medical science undergraduate advisor is an instructor for undergraduate courses in Animal Biology, Animal Physiology, Dinosaur Biology and graduate courses in Environmental Physiology and Conservation Biology.
