Anthony Maiello, Director of Instrumental Studies
Status: full-time, PMI professor

Anthony J. Maiello received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Ithaca College in 1965 and 1967 respectively.  He was a participant in the National Conducting Institute with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and currently serves as an NSO cover conductor for Maestro Slatkin.

Mr. Maiello’s academic experience includes extensive teaching in the public schools and at the university level.  He served as professor of Music and Chairman of Performance at the Crane School of Music, Potsdam College of SUNY, Potsdam, New York, where his duties included teaching advanced instrumental conducting, applied clarinet, woodwind and percussion techniques, and conducting the Crane Wind Ensemble.  Under his direction, the ensembles at Crane and George Mason University both commissioned new works, made numerous recordings, and appeared at regional, statewide and national conferences in the United States and Canada.  He is the author of Warner Bros./Alfred Publications Conducting: A Hands-On-Approach and co-author of The 21st Century Band Method, in addition to numerous works written for string orchestra. Mr. Maiello just completed his most recent book entitled Conducting Nuances.

Professional travels both nationally and abroad include presenting clinics, lectures, and workshops, as well as music festival guest conducting appearances and adjudication.  He has served as Associate Conductor of The McLean Orchestra, McLean, Virginia; has been appointed an Honorary Conductor of The United States Navy Band, Washington, D.C.; and is the conductor of the American Festival Philharmonic Orchestra, Washington, D.C.
Presently Director of Instrumental Studies and a Professor of Music at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, Professor Maiello conducts the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting courses.  In 2007, Mr. Maiello was awarded the title of “University Professor” by the Board of Visitors, the highest rank given to faculty members at George Mason University.
