Romanian Judges Visit GMU
Between March and June of 2001, the Administration
of Justice Program hosted three groups of Romanian judges and prosecutors
for a week-long training program on the rule of law and administration of
justice. ADJ was awarded a sub-contract from the U.S. State Department and
worked in conjunction with the International Judicial Academy in Washington,
D.C.
The program was created to help Romanian leaders
in the justice arena to ensure that rights are respected and proper legal
processes are followed. Throughout their week at George Mason University,
the judges participated in lectures and discussions on American law and procedure,
met with professionals in the justice system, and toured justice facilities.
"We are delighted that George Mason University was chosen for
this important work, and we are pleased to introduce the American justice
system to the Romanian judges and prosecutors, including both the strengths
and problems of our system," said Professor Jon Gould, ADJ’s Assistant
Director, who coordinated the program. "We hope that the program will
help them in setting the direction for future developments in Romania."
