George Mason University *57 Trace Procedure
Instructions by Phone Type
Student Residence Halls
(Call must be in progress to complete the trace.
You cannot trace a call that has been disconnected)
Step 1: Pick up the telephone.
Step 2: Ensure call is on the line.
Step 3: Press flash switch hook quickly and release.
Step 4: Press *57 immediately.
Step 5: Caller will come back on the line.
Step 6: Hang-up on caller.
Step 7: LOG CALL (time, date, what was said, background noises,
etc.)
Step 8: Call GMU Police to report call and verify trace

Faculty, Staff and Administrative Phones
For single line phones WITHOUT link key; Call
must be in progress.
Step 1: Pick up the telephone.
Step 2: Ensure call is on the line.
Step 3: Press flash switch hook quickly and release.
Step 4: Press *57 immediately.
Step 5: Hang up.
NOTE: After flash hook has been completed, caller will automatically
be placed on hold until *57 has been completed.
For single line phones WITH link key; Call must
be in progress.
Step 1: Press link key.
Step 2: Dial *57.
Step 3: Hang up.
NOTE: After the link key has been pressed, the caller will
automatically be placed on hold until *57 has been completed.
For multi-line phones WITHOUT trace key; Call
must be in progress.
Step 1: Press link key.
Step 2: Dial *57.
Step 3: Hang up.
For multi-line phones WITH trace key; Call must be in progress.
Step 1: Press trace key.
Step 2: Hang up
NOTE: After transfer has been pressed, the caller will
automatically be placed on hold until *57 has been completed.
