Selection Process

The George Mason University Police is committed to providing public safety services to its community.  This commitment is reflected in the rigid selection process.  This process takes approximately four months to complete.
Applicants must successfully complete the following steps of the process:

1. Submit an online application at http://hr.gmu.edu/employment or http://jobs.gmu.edu.
2. Pre-screening Interview.
3. Polygraph Examination.
4. Psychological Exam.
5. Medical Exam.
6. Interview with Chief of Police.

Qualifications

-Minimum age of 21.
-High school graduate or GED; advance degree desired.
-Good health and physical condition as determined by physician.
-Valid driver's license at time of appointment.
-Must not have been convicted of felonies or serious misdemeanor crimes.
-No illegal drug use within the past 12 months.
-Must live within a 75 mile radius of the Fairfax Campus.


Training

Police recruits must attend the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy for a 20-week basic police training.

Upon graduation, officers enter a field training program for further instruction focusing on specific training for George Mason University and an overall evaluation of general performance.  Upon successful completion of this program, officers are then released to work on their own and embark on a demanding career serving the George Mason University community.
