Welcome to George Mason University! As a first-time freshman, this is an exciting time. There are many things for you to see and learn. It is extremely important for you to become acclimated to campus. There are new rules and policies to follow, that will be different from high school. You should know that there are resources available to assist you with your first year and beyond. Here are a things you should be aware of:

Strategies for Success
For all students at this credit level, it is important for you to begin your journey with a solid foundation. Here are a few items critical to your success:
First Semester (0-15 credits)- Review Success Strategies for Freshmen.
- Assess your academic strengths. Visit Learning Services(SUBI, rm 354) to learn more about exam strategies, study strategies, and effective time management techniques.
- Get to know your Academic Advisor. If you have a declared major, contact your Academic Department. If you are undeclared-no preference, contact the Academic Advising Center.
- Begin to develop your university plan. If you intend to graduate in 4 years, you will need to carefully plan your schedule to ensure that you are taking the appropriate courses. Use the Course Planner to list courses you plan to take. Consult with your advisor if you need assistance.
- Read your University Catalog and Schedule of Classes. These resources provide information on university policy and important deadlines.
- Review your Student Handbook. This helpful handbook helps you to get to know life at Mason at a quick glance. If you do not have a copy, you can find it on-line by visiting the Student Activities website.
- Take UNIV 100. This course is designed to help with your transition to the university. Visit the Freshman Center to learn more!
At this level, you should continue to follow the suggestions for the first semester (0-15 credits), as well as incorporate the following:
- If you are uncertain of your major, you should begin by exploring the majors offered at Mason. Learn about your skills and areas of interest. Career Services would be a great place to begin. You can also learn about campus job opportunities.
- Check your academic record on PatriotWeb. It’s a good idea to check your schedule to make sure it reflects the classes you selected, or to confirm changes you have made.
- Are you are considering a career in one of the health professions? If you have an interest in applying to dental, medical, pharmacy or veterinary school, you will need to learn about requirements needed to apply.
- Review your Mid-Semester Academic Progress when available on PatriotWeb. This report will help you to determine how you are progressing in your classes. Learn more about Mid-Semester Academic Progress.
- Stay in contact with your advisor. It’s recommended to see your advisor at least twice a semester.
