Domestic Violence


The Self-Development Center provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Self-Develoipment Center during the hours the Center is open. Faculty and staff at GMU may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

Growing Up with Domestic Violence (20 min.*)
This video examines why people become abusive and identifies the tools abusers use to maintain control over the victims. It explores the emotions of the victims and addresses the concerns of children living with domestic violence. (video)
Impact of Domestic Violence on Children (26 min.*)
Violence in the home carries lifelong consequences. This video examines the impact of abuse on children -- on their social and emotional development. It then looks at the subsequent effect on career and family goals and reviews common roles taken on by children growing up with domestic violence. (video)
The Battered Woman (own pace)
Based on case studies, Lenore Walker discusses one of the most under-reported and over-mythologized crimes. Part one describes the psychological perspectives for viewing the battered woman as a victim. Part two discusses the coercive techniques used against these women and part three examines the legal, medical, psychological and other services that continue to keep battered women victims.
