Q: What is A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer?
A: A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer is a play written by Eve Ensler and will be performed and directed by women of the George Mason University community. A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer: Writing To Stop Violence Against Women and Girls, is a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights. These diverse voices rise up in a collective roar to break open, expose, and examine the insidiousness of violence at all levels: brutality, neglect, a punch, even a put-down. The volume features such authors and topics as: Edward Albee on S&M; Maya Angelou on women’s work; Michael Cunningham on self-mutilation; Dave Eggers on a Sudanese abduction; Edwidge Danticat on a border crossing; Carol Gilligan on a daughter witnessing her mother being hit; Susan Miller on raising a son as a single mother; Sharon Olds on a bra; Patricia Bosworth on her own physically abusive relationship; Jane Fonda on reclaiming our Mojo; and many more. These writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. But above all, together they create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us.
This year, A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer is co-sponsored by The Office of Alcohol, Drug and Health Education and Sexual Assault Services. [Back to top]

Q: Will there be a signed performance?
A: No. Saturday Feb. 2 is the assigned performance of The Vagina Monolgues for the deaf and hard of hearing, but there will be no signed performance of A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer.
Q: Is there a dress code?
A: For A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer, a variety of attire is acceptable. Some people still like to make theatre-going a formal event - in business suits, ties, or cocktail dresses. Others will come dressed less formally in pants suits, skirts and blouses, sports coats, or even jeans. It’s more important to us that you come and that you are comfortable than what you are wearing when you get here. Because a heavy coat can be uncomfortable to hold during a performance and awkward to put under your seat, and Harris Theatre does not offer coat-check facilities, the less bulky your outerwear, the better. [Back to top]
Q: Are snacks allowed at the show?
A: No food or drink is allowed in the theatre. Please finish any items before going to your seat and dispose of any wrappers, cups or containers in the provided trash receptacles. [Back to top]
Q: What about cameras, video recorders, pagers and cell phones?
A: Your desire to "capture the magic" is understandable, but not allowed. Please do not bring recording devices to the theatre. Video cameras, cameras (flash, no flash or cell phone) are prohibited, as are audio recorders of all kinds. Any and all recording of the production violates copyright agreements. Flash cameras can endanger performers or distract an actor, whose work requires extreme mental focus and emotional concentration.
If you must bring a pager or cell phone, make sure that it is turned off in order not to disturb other patrons and the performers during the performance. [Back to top]
Q: What about men?
A: Men are encouraged to attend the show. Men are also invited to participate in College Campaign productions and have been cast in our performances of A Memory, A Monolgue, A Rant and A Prayer. Men are invited to get involved behind the scenes as well as to facilitate men's discussion groups and other activities. [Back to top]
Q: How can I get involved with the show?
A: We are always looking for volunteers to help us prepare for the show – in advance and the days of our performances. If you would like to be involved, please contact Connie Kirkland at ckirklan@gmu.edu or Susan Stahley at sstahley@gmu.edu. [Back to top]
