The Society of Professional Journalists is one of the nation's foremost journalism associations. The Society's code of ethics, which covers truthfulness, minimizing harm, independence, and accountability, is voluntarily adhered to by a broad selection of journalism professionals.

The First Amendment Center promotes the guarantee of liberties provided by the First Amendment, including the freedoms of speech, press, and religion, and the rights to assemble and petition the government. The First Amendment Center offers student writers guidelines for requesting Freedom of Information Act materials, discussions on First Amendment application, and daily First Amendment news.

The Association of Writers and Writing Programs, or AWP, serves writers, teachers, and writing programs through its journals, annual reports, conferences, and contests. AWP is recognized and relied upon nationally, and is located on the George Mason University campus.
