A Message from the University Librarian

Thank you for your interest in the George Mason University Libraries, which play such a vital role in the educational pursuits of every Mason student. From bioengineering to business and Baroque music, the University Libraries provide the scholarly resources, programs, and assistance required for every student’s academic success.

In the University Libraries, you will find more than just the 1.2 million volumes we hold. You will also find some 25,000 online journals, 540 databases, 3 million microforms, 215,000 maps, 350,000 government documents, and 200 unique archival collections in our Special Collections & Archives. All these combine to make the University Libraries the center of Mason’s academic enterprise outside the classroom, laboratory, or studio.

Beyond being the “keepers” of knowledge, the University Libraries have also provided hands-on training in preservation and digitization of some of the rare items in Special Collections & Archives. History students have digitized portions of collections featuring historic maps of Virginia, the papers of Nobel Prize winner James M. Buchanan, and the archive that documents the development of planned communities both locally and across the globe.

As Mason continues to grow, and we know it will, the University Libraries will persist in meeting the scholarly needs of Mason’s entire academic community, and the greater Northern Virginia community, which we also serve. I invite you to visit one of our five libraries on Mason’s three campuses in Fairfax, Arlington, and Prince William to learn what we offer and how we can assist you.

For information about how you can advance our programs, services, and collections, please contact the Office of University Development at 703-993-8647. Questions are always welcomed!

John G. Zenelis
