MEMO-Project Background

In April 1998, George Mason formed a steering committee to establish a unified electronic method of communication: the Collaborative Work Environment Initiative. This was in response to the difficulties inherent in having four separate supported e-mail packages  work together seamlessly. This committee invited 43 faculty and staff to develop the specifications for George Mason's comprehensive electronic communications software.

From June 1998 through March 1999, these faculty and staff evaluated several packages including Netscape, Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, and Microsoft Exchange. Based on the extensive evaluation by George Mason, Netscape Messenger, Directory Server, and Calendar Server were selected as the best solution. In August 1999, the procurement of the Netscape software and services was completed, and the large-scale implementation analysis began with the assistance of Netscape Consulting services.  The benefits of this Netscape solution include:

Single, Centralized University Directory - All University e-mail addresses will be consolidated into one official directory that all e-mail clients can access. This single directory will be refreshed daily from the administrative Human Records and Student Information databases. In addition, customer self-service directory information changes will be effective  immediately.

Web-Based Interface - Feature-rich web-based interface will allow access to e-mail and folders from any system without requiring configuration of arcane settings.

Support for Open Standards -Provides support for IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and POP (Post OfficeProtocol), which allows for more technically savvy customers to choose to use the e-mail client they prefer. In addition, this eases viewing of attachments.

Single platform for all Students, Faculty, and Staff - Unified platform eliminates complexity for transferring messages through multiple different campus e-mail servers.

Folder Support - Messages stored in folders are accessible from anywhere (provided the web interface or an IMAP clientis used), and are backed-up to tape on a regular basis.

20mb disc quota - The default e-mail data quota is 20MB for all mailboxes. Increases are evaluated on an individual basis.

Calendar - Personal calendar functionality is available for those individuals that desire it.
