MEMO
- GMU E-Mail Is Changing!
Please read
carefully to ensure that your e-mail service and
communications
are not disrupted. Last year GMU began the
migration
of faculty, staff and students to a new email system
called MEMO
(Mason Enterprise Messaging Online).
AT
THIS TIME GMU IS PREPARING TO PLACE THE
REMAINING
GMU STUDENTS ON THE MEMO SYSTEM.
What will
happen is the following:
·
On 20 August 2001, all students who do not currently have accounts
on MEMO will have their MEMO account created.
·
Once your MEMO account has been created an email will be sent to your Mason/OSF1
account informing you of the account creation and directing you to MEMO
Online Accounts page where you can generate a temporary password that will
allow you to access your new email account.
·
Once your MEMO account is created all new incoming email will be directed
to that account. Your old mail however, will remain on your old
account.
A utility is available that will allow you to migrate your old mail to
the new account if you so choose.
·
You may continue to send e-mail from your old Mason/OSF1 account to correct
any subscriptions you may have with listserves.
Some things
you should know about the new system.
1. Your
userid remains the same.
2. Your
email address remains the same: youruserid@gmu.edu
3. If
you subscribed to list-serves from your old account you should go to your
old account and unsubscribe from them and re-subscribe from your new MEMO
account. This will prevent future problems with communicating and controlling
your lists.
4. Your
new email account will be accessible using a web interface, or
by using
an email client configured to check mail using either the IMAP
(preferred)
or POP protocol. In the labs, the only way you may access your email account
is through the web interface. The web interface involves browsing to http://mail.gmu.edu
and logging in to Netscape Messenger. In your home/dorms you may configure
an email client to access your mail. ITU recommends and supports the Netscape
Messenger client, but you may use Eudora or the Outlook products to check
your mail. The instructions to configure the Netscape Client are located
at http;//www.gmu.edu/email under
the "Configuration" link.
5. Telnet/FTP
access is not allowed on the MEMO system. You will continue to use Mason/OSF1
for: dial up access; access to programs other than email; and personal
web space.
