Alternative Therapies

Exhibitors from these disciplines will provide demonstrations and information about their practice at the Health and Fitness Challenge 2002.

oAcupuncture - Acupuncture is an ancient form of medicine used in China for over two thousand years. It is energy medicine that addresses the energetic aspects of the body. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the body at specific locations called acupuncture points.

oAromatherapy - Aromatherapy is derived from the ancient practice of using natural plant essences to promote health and well-being. It consists of the use of pure essential oils obtained from a wide assortment of plants, which have been steam distilled or cold-pressed from flowers, fruit, bark and roots.

oArt Therapy - At some point in their lives, people may find themselves overwhelmed by the intensity of their emotions which are difficult to face either by themselves or with others. Art therapy offers an opportunity to explore these intense or painful thoughts and feelings in a supportive environment. It involves using a wide variety of art materials, for example paints, clay and batik, to create a visual representation of thought and feelings. Art Therapy can be an individual activity but is often used very successfully in group situations.

oChiropractic - Chiropractic is, specifically, the maintenance of human health through the adjustment of the spine

oHealing Touch - Healing Touch is a type of alternative healing using hands-on energy-based techniques to balance and align the human energy field. Body, mind, emotion and spirit are touched through this therapeutic process.

oHerbology - The focus of herbalism is to support the body's self healing ability. Herbs nourish us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

oHypnotherapy - Hypnotherapy is a tool for reaching and dealing with problems of the mind and body using a state of mental relaxation in which the patient is open to suggestion from the therapist.

oMassage Therapy - Massage is among the oldest treatments used by man. It helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living.

oT'ai Chi Chih - Often referred to as "Joy Through Movement", Tai Chi Chih is a series of positions strung together into one continuous movement, including a set beginning and end.

oReflexology - Reflexology is a science that maps out the reflexes on the feet and hands to all the organs and the rest of the body. By applying acupressure and massage like techniques to the feet and hands, all other body parts are positively affected.

oReiki - Reiki in Japanese means "universal life force energy". It is a powerful - yet gentle - method of healing through opening, clearing, and re-balancing one's energy system.
