I. SCOPE
This policy applies to all faculty and classified employees of George Mason University at all University locations.
II. POLICY STATEMENT
George Mason University celebrates years of faithful and dedicated service to the institution with a public ceremony and commemorative award. On University Day (on or about April 7) each year, full-time faculty and classified staff with 5 to 40 years of continuous state service will be so recognized. This award is presented only for service and does not apply to performance or tenure.
Eligibility for the Mason service certificate and pin will be based on a minimum of five years of continuous state service including previous, continuous employment at other state agencies. Employment in wage or part-time faculty positions will not be counted. All periods of leave without pay are considered state service.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES
Human Resources and Payroll will sponsor the University Day ceremony with assistance from the Office of Events Management.
The Reward and Recognition Coordinator will be responsible for identifying the awardees, producing the service certificates, ordering service pins and gifts, providing staff to assist and coordinating logistical details with the Office of Events Management.
IV. EFFECTIVE DATE AND APPROVAL
This policy is effective October 1, 2003 and was revised on September 12, 2007. This policy shall be reviewed
and revised, if necessary, annually to become effective at the beginning
of the University’s fiscal year, unless other noted.
