I. SCOPE
This policy applies to all George Mason University faculty, staff, students,
visitors and guests of the University at all GMU locations. University
personnel must inform visitors and guests of this policy.
II. POLICY STATEMENT
The purpose of this policy is to ensure compliance with the Virginia Indoor
Clean Air Act by providing a healthful and safe work environment for faculty,
staff, and students and to preserve the right of choice regarding smoking.
Within facilities owned or leased by the University, smoking is permitted only in designated areas. Smoking areas shall be designated by the appropriate Vice President in accordance with the following guidelines:
· In general, smoking is prohibited except in those areas designated as “Smoking Permitted.” These areas must have signs posted.
· All building hallways, instructional areas, restrooms, and all other public areas must be smoke-free. No smoking is allowed except in areas designated as “Smoking Permitted.”
· No smoking is allowed in buildings or areas of buildings determined to be hazardous by the above designees.
· Smoking will be permitted outside of buildings if the area is not identified as a harzardous area.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, the Associate
Provost for Personnel & Budget, and the Assistant Vice President for
University Services have the overall responsibility for implementing and
enforcing this policy in their areas, and shall inform faculty, staff
and students under their jurisdicitons of the provisions of this policy.
IV. EFFECTIVE DATE AND APPROVAL
This policy is effective June 7, 2004. This policy shall be reviewed and
revised, if necessary, annually to become effective at the beginning of
the University’s fiscal year, unless otherwise noted.
