Why Establishing Trust is So Important in Helping Victims of Sexual Assault

Why Establishing Trust is so Important in Helping Victims of Sexual Assault

The vast majority of sexual assaults that take place among college students occur between people who know each other. This type of sexual assault is often referred to as acquaintance rape. A sexual assault between individuals who know one another results in a violation of trust.

Whether the assailant was a dating partner, classmate or friend, often, the victim would never have suspected her friend or acquaintance was capable of such an offense. Because of this, it is often difficult for him/her to trust others or his/her own judgment.

For these reasons, many sexual assault survivors never share their experience with anyone. If someone has confided in you about a sexual assault, you have been shown a great deal of trust. It is essential that you honor that rust and support this person in anyway you feel comfortable.
