Letters to George: Learning Around the World

Hola George,

mountains in mexicoSurrounded by mountains, Guanajuato, Mexico, is a quaint city with intriguing history, amiable citizens, and colorful houses. Lining the cobble stoned streets are restaurants, hostels, shops, and bars and each are unique in their own way. Street vendors sell fresh fruit, vegetables, and made-to-order tacos on almost every corner. Adding to the striking scenery are gardens and plazas that serve as main social settings.

I experienced life in Guanajuato as an intermediate student studying Spanish for two weeks in January 2008, where I immersed myself in Mexican culture. I lived with a wonderful family who welcomed me into their humble abode, a traditional Spanish/Mediterranean style home with three outdoor terraces and a full length front porch. Read More >>>

TIME Names Hussam a Global Hero of the Environment

In issues of TIME magazine now on newsstands, Mason chemistry professor Abul Hussam is cited as a Global Hero of the Environment for 2007. He was presented with an award in London on Oct. 25.

Earlier this year, Hussam won the $1 million Grainger Challenge Award for his water filtering system invention that is improving health and saving lives in developing countries, especially in his native Bangladesh.

A letter to Hussam from TIME International Editor Michael Elliott said the magazine is recognizing "individuals whose remarkable hard work, determination and vision are raising awareness of the threats to our environment. These heroes of our time are inspirational figures whose talent and dedication is truly making a difference to the quality of our lives and our planet."

NEW PROGRAM LAUNCH

The International Postsecondary Development Program made a commitment in 2004 to actively participate in this vision by building partnerships with institutions, agencies and communities around the world that are responsive to societal and economic development needs, seeking new opportunities to develop International Community College Town Centers around the globe, and providing opportunities for current students and graduates to develop leadership skills and broaden their horizons.
