Academics at the James Buchanan Center

The James M. Buchanan Center for Political Economy is named in honor of Nobel laureate and George Mason University Emeritus Professor James M. Buchanan, whose groundbreaking work has enriched our under-standing of the interrelationship between politics, law and the economy. The Center builds on that legacy with its commitment to rigorous, inter-disciplinary research and educational programs.

Research

The Center's faculty has earned a worldwide reputation for its research in the field of Public Choice, and Austrian economics.

Both of these analytical frameworks focus on applying the scientific insights of economics to practical, real-world problems. These problems are often related to current public policy issues, ranging from redistricting to deregulation to the constitutional structure of democracies. A list of their working papers and information on their recent publications are available online.

Graduate Student Fellowships

The Mercatus Center at George Mason University financially supports graduate students at the James Buchanan Center. Center students share a keen interest in learning to apply economics to critical problems facing society.
