Student Computer Access
What percentage
of students on this campus have full-time use of personal computers?
All university residence facilities are wired for Internet connections.
In addition, the university provides 80 hours a week of open access
to computer facilities, with 24/7 access during exam periods. The
University Libraries provides access more than 150 computers in the four
library facilities and is open at least 106.5 hours a week for research
purposes. In the last academic year, there were slightly less than
500,000 student visits to university computer labs.
The university's Office of Institutional Research estimates that more
than half of George Mason's students own their own computers.
Computer/Student Ratio
What is the ratio of public access computers
to undergraduate enrollment?
There is approximately one public-access computer at George Mason for
every eight undergraduate students.
Student E-Mail
What percentage of students use e-mail and
other software applications on a regular basis?
The university supports almost 40,000 e-mail accounts for faculty, staff,
and students. About half of those accounts are used on a regular basis
to access an e-mail application. Many students, faculty, and staff use
e-mail accounts from providers other than the University. The graduating
senior survey indicates that 98 percent of the students used e-mail
and the Internet in 10or more courses during their studies at Mason.
While the university doesn't have records of student use of software
applications, there are more than 400,000 student visits per year to
the University computer facilities, and that would be one measure of
extensive use of the software applications supported in the labs, primarily
the Microsoft Office suite.

Personal Student Web Pages
Does the campus allow personal student web
pages?
Yes, students can create personal web pages. There is a web
development link on the George Mason
web site that includes introductory information about designing web
pages. The Student Technology Assistance
and Resources Center (STAR), a department of DoIT,
is composed of three groups that focus on student support and assistance.
STAR*T provides hands-on technology training for students (Johnson Center, Room 344). Web.STAR helps students design and create web sites (Johnson Center, Room 311),
and STAR*Works (Johnson Center, Room 311) assists students in learning office productivity and
presentation tools.
Electronic Contact Information
Is contact information for students, faculty,
and staff readily accessible electronically?
There is a "Mason Directory" option on Mason's home page, which allows anyone to search for faculty, staff, or student information. For faculty
and staff, the information includes office location, phone number, and
e-mail. For students, the information lists the e-mail and intended major.
Responsible Use of Computing
Is there a campus code of behavior for use
of computing resources?
George Mason's Responsible
Use of Computing document is available online. This policy applies
to all academic and operational departments and offices at all university
locations, owned and leased. The policies and procedures provided apply
to all university faculty, staff, students, visitors, and contractors.
It identifies the responsibilities of each member of George Mason's
community in the use of computing resources. There is a Security Review
Panel (SRP) at stopit@gmu.edu that
will investigate any complaints of improper usage. The University
Copyright Office is designated with the U.S. Copyright Office as
the contact for alleged infringements of copyright and investigates
copyright-related issues.
General information and access
to resources on IT security are located on the Security
Office web site.

over the web?
The university's web site provides a daily
calendar of campus events. Information about all student services
is accessible via the web through the Students

student journal is an online publication. Students can also contribute
to the print publications via e-mail.
GMUSports.com
offers schedules and stats on Patriot sports, email links to Mason coaches, a
place to purchase tickets online, and live broadcasts of Patriot games. In addition,
an independent site, Masonhoops.com, provides
resources for fans of Patriot basketball, including audio archives of the Coach
Larranaga Show.

and are these linked to the campus home page?
