Oprah's On!

"This is a gorgeous photo," Oprah Winfrey says, examining her face on the cover of "Time." Beside her is a copy of "Vogue," another magazine she's appearing in this month. Oprah is everywhere.

It's been several years since her talk-show's theme song was "I'm Every Woman," but Oprah is still trying her best to live up to that mantra. In just the past few months, she's signed a new contract worth over $150 million, recorded a new theme song which she sang herself, "Run On" and rejected an offer to interview Monica Lewinsky.

That doesn't even include her latest project, the film adaptation of Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize winning novel "Beloved," which Oprah starred in and produced.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., held an event celebrating women fashion designers of yesterday and today. Curator of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Richard Martin, devoted 45 minutes to a slide show and lecture. Highlighting costumes such as Chanel's original "little black dress," Martin offered a detailed and often humorous account of a woman's liberation through fashion.

The Arts

This Friday, Oct. 9, the Center for the Arts will be showcasing the English Chamber Orchestra with a very special guest conductor and violinist, Pichas Zuckerman. This will mark an association of almost 30 years between the world-famous orchestra and the talented Mr. Zuckerman.

Pinchas Zuckerman's musical ingenuity is known throughout the world and has been widely recognized. He has released over one hundred recordings, won two Grammy Awards and has been nominated 21 times. He has collaborated with musicians and orchestras all over the world: Itzhak Perlman, The National Symphony, and the Orchestre National de France, to name a few.

The English Chamber Orchestra (ECO) is London's only full-time chamber orchestra, and has also worked with many musical greats such as Benjamin Britten and Raymond Leppard. Formed in 1960, the orchestra has recorded over 1,000 works and spends about three months of every year touring all over the world.

The program for Friday will include Bach's "Violin Concerto in E Major" and Beethoven's "Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61." The featured piece of the night, however, is a suite from the opera "Los Alamos," written by Marc Neikrug. This opera is very different from classical operas like "Madame Butterfly" because it takes place in three different time periods: the 1100s, the 1940s and in the future. This opera is also different because it deals with anti-nuclear issues.

The English Chamber Orchestra with Pinchas Zuckerman will be showing on Friday, Oct. 9. The show begins at 8 p.m. and free student tickets are still available.

Raw power, raw history, raw tap, raw truth. That is the powerful theme to "Bring In 'Da Noise, Bring In 'Da Funk. Nothing is held back in this performance as dancers tap through the history of African-Americans, beginning with the journey from Africa.

Wanna dance?

Comics Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan from "Saturday Night Live" cash in and don't disappoint, bringing the half-witted Butabi Brothers to the big screen. The beat that makes them bob their head is still irresistibly funny, but the movie is about the relationship of the two uneducated brothers more than it is about the club scene.

Stay out of the Water

Have you ever said to yourself, "Damn, I wish they'd make a game where you could race big, bulky, hard-to-maneuver speed boats!"?

Me neither.

But for those of you who have, Sony has fulfilled your wish in the form of "Turbo Prop Racing," an uninspired but graphically pleasing attempt to do for boats what "Gran Turismo" did for automobiles.
