Faculty Senate Creates General Ed, Communication with BOV Committees

By Emily Yaghmour

At its Dec. 6 meeting, the Faculty Senate created two new faculty committees: a standing committee on general education and an ad hoc committee on communication with the Board of Visitors (BOV).

The General Education Committee will work with the associate provost for general education, approving courses proposed for meeting requirements, developing procedures for measuring required skills, approving and monitoring proficiency and competency tests designed to fulfill general requirements, and investigating the requirements’ effect on students.

Including the associate provost for general education, the committee will consist of 14 voting members. Eight members will be elected by the Faculty Senate, four members will be appointed by the provost, and one member will be a student elected by the Student Senate.

After dissolving its Relations with the BOV Committee, the senate also moved to create a new ad hoc Communication with the BOV Committee, whose duties will terminate in September 2002. This committee will comprise five faculty members, three of whom will be senators. The senate’s Nominations Committee will nominate candidates to serve on this committee.
