University Prepares for Homecoming Festivities

By Jeremy Lasich

Good news if you can’t make it to New Orleans this year to celebrate Mardi Gras--you can still party at the Mason Mardi Gras during Homecoming 2001, Feb. 12-17.

The week’s events begin with the Program Board’s version of Say What? Karaoke on Monday from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center Atrium. Student organizations and offices will compete for spirit points. Later that night, a pool party will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Tuesday is Spirit Day, featuring a parade at noon on the Johnson Center North Plaza, and everybody is encouraged to wear green and gold. Don’t have green and gold? A homecoming t-shirt (available for $5 at events throughout the week or at the Student Activities Office, in SUB I) will work.

You can make your own Mason Mardi Gras mask on Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Johnson Center, Room 116. On Thursday, there will be a student talent competition in the Bistro at 7 p.m.

Friday offers a basketball competition in the PE Building from noon to 3 p.m. For more information or to register, contact the Program Board at x32925. A bonfire will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in Parking Lot F. Entertainment and light refreshments will be provided.

Saturday, Homecoming Day, caps off the week with a block party, the basketball game, and a masquerade ball. The block party begins at 1:30 p.m. in Parking Lot L. Those who wish to reserve a block, must contact Traci Claar at x38846. At 4 p.m., the men’s basketball team hosts rival James Madison University. Fireworks at the Mason Pond follow the game.
