Innovations 2000 Showcases Superior Student Work

By Robin Sinckler

George Mason University students have the opportunity to showcase their creative projects and compete for prizes at Innovations 2000 (i2000), a celebration of the processes and outcomes of innovative student learning initiatives, held on Wednesday, April 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Johnson Center Multipurpose Room. The annual event is sponsored by the Provost's Office, University Life, the Department of Instructional Improvement and Instructional Technologies, and the Century Club of George Mason University. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be provided.

This year student work is judged in five categories: Community Partnership, Originality and Creativity, Best Use of Technology, Most Effective Corporate Interaction, and the new Student's Choice category. A prize of $100 is awarded in each category.

The judges are representatives from each of the sponsoring organizations, with the exception of Student's Choice. This category is judged by registered Mason student attendees who, after showing valid Mason identification at the door, will receive a ballot that must be submitted by 3 p.m. on the day of the event. The awards ceremony follows at 3:30 p.m.

Submissions may include student writing, artwork, videos, web pages, science projects, experiential learning projects, community projects, technology innovations, and other demonstrations of intellectual and artistic achievement. Some examples of previous submissions are Teaching Financial Management through WebCT, Weaving a Tapestry of Nursing through Stories, Universal Dance, Globalizing Your Education, and Authentic Lab Experiences in Cognitive Psychology. The entry selection process is competitive, so teachers should encourage their students to submit quality projects that demonstrate unique and creative learning experiences. The i2000 committee will screen entries for quality and thoroughness. Works in progress are welcome.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 10, 2000. Applications are available online at media.gmu.edu/i2000 and at the STAR Center, Johnson Center, Room 229. For more information, contact Star Muir at smuir@gmu.edu or x34429.
