New York Times Financial Reporter to Speak
Diana Henriques, an investigative reporter at the New York Times for
more than 10 years and winner of numerous awards, will present Investigative
Journalism and American Business: An Uneasy Relationship from Its Origins to Its
Present Possibilities at noon on Monday, Dec. 3, in SUB II, Rooms 5, 6,
and 7.

Social Work Becomes Department
At the September Board of Visitors meeting, the Social Work Program, which
matured under the leadership of New Century College, became a stand-alone department
within the College of Arts and Sciences. The move paves the way for establishing
a masters degree in social work and readies the program for reaccreditation.
Griffiths, Grady to Continue as Deans
School of Information Technology and Engineering Dean Lloyd Griffiths
and School of Law Dean Mark Grady have both had their terms as dean extended.
Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day
Bring your family and friends to Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day at the Patriot
Center on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 4:30 p.m. to watch the Patriots battle Southern
Illinois University on the basketball court. Tickets may be purchased for $3 (regularly
$10) at the Patriot Center Box Office or at the door on game day. At the game,
faculty and staff can take advantage of a concession deal and door prizes. The
first 500 attendees will receive a special Be a Patriot pen.
Winter Holiday Schedule Announced
The universitys observance of the winter holidays will begin on Monday,
Dec. 24, 2001, and continue through Jan. 1, 2002. In addition, effective Dec.
20, eight hours of leave will be added to the compensatory leave balance of full-time
classified staff and proportionate additions will be made for part-time classified
staff. Eight hours of leave will be added to the annual leave balance of full-time
administrative/professional faculty, with a proportionate amount for part-time
administrative/professional faculty. These additional hours are to be taken by
June 30, 2002. In addition, the university will observe Martin Luther King Day
on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002. Please consult web sites for holiday operating schedules
for libraries, the Johnson Center, and other units. Classified staff who are required
to work on designated holidays are eligible for compensatory leave for the hours
worked. Administrative/professional faculty required to work on a designated holiday
should arrange alternate time off with their supervisor.
Book Drops Closed During Winter Break
The University Libraries book drops will be unavailable between Dec. 22, 2001,
and Jan. 2, 2002, as part of the normal campuswide lockdown during winter break.
Fines will not be charged for these days. University Libraries usual renewal service
will be available online at library. gmu.edu during winter break.
Annual Holiday Party for Mason Faculty/Staff
Mark your calendar and plan to attend the annual faculty and staff Holiday
Party on Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Johnson Center Multipurpose Room from 3 to 5:30
p.m. In addition to food and fun, the universitys Staff Senate will be collecting
donations of canned food and toys for the Salvation Army.
