Mason Appreciates Its Employees

By Sarah McGurk

Encouragement, positive feedback, and support are important in an employeeís relationship with his or her employer. Martha Reiner, awards coordinator in Human Resources at George Mason, understands the benefits of such a relationship. ìIt is so important that supervisors and department heads take the time to say thank you for a job well done to their outstanding employees,î she says.

George Masonís recognition program, which began in 1996, has grown into one of the best awards programs in Virginia, says Reiner. Part of this reputation comes from the variety of awards supervisors have at their disposal. Currently, the university provides nine recognition programs.

ìTo me, recognition is crucial to the maintenance of morale in the workplace,î says Reiner. ìThe awards program is designed, by means of the different types of awards, to recognize those unsung heroes who, by their dedication and effort, make the programs of the university function smoothly.î
