News In Brief

E-Mail Library Notices

All university library notices sent to students, faculty, and staff will be delivered to their university-assigned e-mail address and not through the U.S. Postal Service. Each patron is responsible for activating his or her e-mail account by going to maria.gmu.edu/e-mail. Patrons who wish to have notices forwarded to another e-mail account may do so from their George Mason account. Instructions on how to forward e-mail are available at each libraries' circulation desk.

Old Town Hall Lecture Series

The Old Town Hall Lecture Series, in conjunction with the Fairfax Audubon Society, will present "Creating Backyard Wildlife Habitats," a presentation on the Natural Wildlife Federation's 30-year program of landscaping for wildlife. Featuring George Mason alumnus Ray Smith, president of the Dogwood Development Group, the lecture will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2002, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Old Town Hall. English Lecture Series

The English Department holds its Wednesday Evening Lecture Series in Lecture Hall 1 from 5:55 to 7:10 p.m. during the semester as part of the English 325 Dimensions of Writing and Literature lecture and readings series. All members of the university and the community are invited to attend. The March lectures are as follows:

  • 3/6 - Keith Clark, English, "Point of View in Sonny's Blues"
  • 3/20 - Ken Guerrant, Career Services, "Career Opportunities for English Majors"
  • 3/27 - Steven Weinberger, English and Linguistics, "Phonology and Literary Nonsense"

GSE Spring 2002 Career Counseling Services

The Graduate School of Education will hold Career Counseling sessions every Wednesday, March 20 to May 1, and every Thursday, March 21 to May 2. Sessions are for adults who wish to resolve career-related decisions; college students seeking help with selecting a major or establishing goals; and high school juniors or seniors seeking help with career or educational planning. Commencement Fair Held this Month

The Bookstore is sponsoring a Commencement Fair March 6-8 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Sid and Reva Dewberry Hall (Multipurpose Room) in the Johnson Center and on the Prince William Campus on March 5. The fairs will feature caps, gowns, rings, announcements, diploma frames, and more.

Business Cards Order Form Now Online

Now you can quickly place business card, letterhead, and envelope orders by using the online business card order form. Go to gmu.edu/departments/ur/publications.html and click on Business Cards Online Order Form. Print out the form and fax it to the number listed. Because an authorizing signature is required, the form cannot be sent electronically.

Biology Announces Spring Seminar Schedule

The Biology Department seminars this spring will feature guest scientists from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area; departmental speakers; and graduate students. On March 8, Thomas Leuteritz from George Mason's Environmental Science and Policy Department will speak on "Conservation of an Endangered Tortoise in Madagascar" in Robinson Hall. George Mason Dance Company Gala

The George Mason Dance Company Gala 2002 on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall features premiere pieces by Susan Shields and Buffy Price along with David Parson's The Envelope and Lisa Race's Social Climb. Tickets are $15; $12 for students and seniors.

Provost Hosts Faculty Forum

Provost Peter Stearns will host a Faculty Forum on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., in Mason Hall, rooms D3A and B, concerning promotion and tenure standards and practices. All faculty members are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
