George Mason Launches Fund-raising Campaign on April 6
By Daniel Walsch
George Mason University will officially launch its first multimillion dollar
comprehensive fund-raising campaign on April 6 with a black tie dinner in the
Johnson Center. Cohosting this gathering of donors and community leaders will
be Alan Merten, George Mason president; Edwin Meese, rector of the Board of Visitors
(BOV); Sidney Dewberry, campaign chair, BOV member, and George Mason University
Foundation trustee; and Lovey Hammel, foundation chair and 1988 George Mason graduate.
The launching of the Campaign for George Mason University brings public recognition
to a comprehensive effort that began several years ago with planning and leadership
support. "Funds raised through the campaign will advance George Mason's vision
for innovation in education and research within this great region," says Merten.
The campaign's dollar goal will be announced at the dinner.
"Many people within and outside the university have been working extremely
hard on the university's behalf to make this institution's first campaign a major
success," Merten adds. "Through the campaign, we hope to expand a philanthropic
tradition that will benefit the university, its students, and the community for
years to come."
The dinner coincides with the 30th anniversary of George Mason as an independent
public university. While the April 6 event formally launches the campaign, two
other programs are set to introduce it as well: the Alumni Association's Celebration
of Distinction dinner on April 2 and the annual University Day celebration and
service awards breakfast on April 5.
The campaign is built on the needs of the university's various academic units
and disciplines. Funding priorities include faculty endowments, faculty research
and project support, student scholarships, student services and programs, facilities
support, community outreach, and unrestricted support.
