English Lecture Series

The English Department holds its Wednesday Evening Lecture Series in Lecture Hall 1 from 5:55 to 7:10 p.m. during the semester as part of the English 325 Dimensions of Writing and Literature lecture and readings series. All members of the university and the community are invited to attend. The April lectures are as follows:

  • 4/3 - Peter Klappert, English, "Introduction to Tuba"
  • 4/10 - Steve Zeitlin, director of Citylore, New York City, "New York City's Spontaneous Memorials for Sept. 11"
  • 4/24 - Margaret Yocom, English, "Story- Telling and Oral Tradition"

Alibek to Lecture on Inhalation Anthrax

Kenneth Alibek, distinguished professor of medical microbiology, director of George Mason's new Center for Biodefense, and president of Advanced Biosystems Inc., will speak on the immunopathogenesis and pathologic anatomy of inhalational anthrax as part of the Biology Department's Distinguished Lecture Series. The lecture will take place on Monday, April 15, in the Johnson Center Cinema at 7:30 p.m. Alibek will discuss the need to re-examine and revise current theories on the role of anthrax toxin to identify what has been missed in the field of protection and treatment against anthrax infections. Women's Studies Offers Graduate Certificate

The Women's Studies Program has a new graduate certificate program for students interested in understanding the social, political, and economic situations of women in their local, national, and international contexts. The certificate comprises 15 credit hours and a capstone portfolio. It can be taken as a stand-alone program or in conjunction with a graduate degree program. ICAR Presents Changing Conflict Stories Workshop

Research Professor Carlos Sluzki, Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR), will present "Changing Conflict Stories: A Skill-based Approach to Narratives" on Saturday, April 6, 2002, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in ICAR's front conference room. Participants will discuss the structure of narratives and identify tools to facilitate changes in stories with embedded interpersonal conflicts at the end of the seminar. The workshop costs $10. Victims' Rights Awareness Week Observed this Month

Victims' Rights Awareness Week is scheduled for April 22-29. Sexual Assault Services, the University Police Department, and the Athletics Department have coordinated several events to mark the week. On Thursday, April 25, President and Mrs. Merten will lead a Victims' Rights Walk/Run, and on Sunday, April 28, the PAVE 5K Fun Run will be held. Mason's Staff Senate Annual Report Released

The Staff Senate released its annual report presenting its accomplishments and goals for the next year. The Staff Senate's accomplishments this year included a fundraiser for the Sept. 11 terrorist attack victims and a holiday food and toy drive during the faculty and staff holiday party. Student Creativity Highlighted at Innovations 2002

The annual Innovations showcase of learning opportunities and creative student projects is Wednesday, April 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Johnson Center's Sid and Reva Dewberry Hall.

Monetary awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m. for top honors in the categories of community partnership, originality and creativity, best use of technology, most effective corporate interaction, most effective technology tool, most interesting research project, and the student's choice award.

The Doctor of Arts in Community College Education (DACCE) is holding information sessions the first Wednesday of every month for students interested in teaching at the undergraduate and community college levels.
