Mason’s Facilities, Faculty to be Highlighted at Sept. 18 Convocation

By Daniel Walsch

“Building for Excellence” is the theme of this year’s fall convocation, to be held Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 3:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center’s Dewberry Hall.

President Alan Merten and Provost Peter Stearns will jointly discuss several broad topics, ranging from an update on the university’s 2007 master plan and this year’s higher education bond referendum, to the university’s current crop of leaders and the impact facilities have on research and teaching.

“Much as we tried to do last year with our institution’s first faculty convocation, it is our intent to provide the campus with an updated vision of George Mason as we move into what will be another very challenging year,” says Stearns.

“Between Virginia’s extremely serious budget problems and the impact the upcoming general obligation bond referendum will have on our institution’s growth plans, there is much on people’s minds and much to review,” he adds. “This will be a timely gathering.”

One goal of the convocation, says Merten, is to acknowledge all who contribute to George Mason’s growth and quest for excellence. Key members of the university’s community will be recognized at the event. They include members of the Board of Visitors, student government leaders, officers in the Faculty and Staff Senates, members of advisory boards representing the academic units, members of the Foundation Board of Trustees, and key supporters of the university’s capital campaign.

“Our institution’s future, of course, depends upon a combination of many important elements: facilities, teachers, students, staff, researchers, members of the community, and elected officials,” says Merten. “All are essential to our success.”

The faculty convocation is open to the entire campus community.
