Fuller Appointed As First Dwight Schar Faculty Chair
By Denise St. Ours
Stephen Fuller, professor of public policy and director of the Center for
Regional Analysis, has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Dwight Schar
Faculty Chair. A recent $1-million gift from Schar, chairman and CEO of NVR Inc.,
initiated the creation of the new chair. Fuller’s appointment is for a term
of five years.
“This appointment recognizes Professor Fuller for his innovative work
within the Center for Regional Analysis,” says Provost Peter Stearns. “Funding
to provide faculty with the tools needed to advance knowledge and maximize creativity
is critical to the university’s mission.”
Fuller’s research has focused on the changing economic structure of
the Washington metropolitan area, and the impact of the evolving role of the federal
government as a major source of new jobs and business activity within the overall
economy. This research has led to the development of a series of indicators that
track the current and near-term performance of the area’s economy.
“Stephen Fuller is a respected leader in both the academic and business
communities, and I am pleased he will continue to serve George Mason and the region
in this new capacity,” says President Alan Merten.
Fuller, who received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, joined the faculty
at George Mason in 1994 after serving 25 years as a professor at George Washington
University. He has written more than 500 articles, papers, and reports in the
fields of housing, urban planning, and economic development. Fuller serves on
the Governor’s Advisory Board of Economists for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
