David Stevenson of NCC DiesBy Eve D'Angelo David Stevenson, associate professor in New Century College, died July 25 at the age of 51. Stevenson was also the director of nonprofit management studies and an affiliate member of the Department of Public and International Affairs. Stevenson graduated cum laude with a B.A. in sociology from Norfolk State College in 1973. He earned his M.A. in 1974 and his Ph.D. in 1979 in biocultural anthropology from Ohio State University. Stevenson taught at Memphis State University, Wayne State University, and the University of Maryland at College Park before joining George Mason in 1996. Stevenson's research centered on nonprofit organization management. He published numerous national and international publications and was the principal investigator of a project on nonprofit studies, which was funded by a Kellogg grant. In addition to his teaching and administrative responsibilities, Stevenson served as director of the National Center for Charitable Statistics (the Urban Institute) and associate director of the research department at Independent Sector. He was instrumental in establishing the Center for Service and Leadership and the George Mason American humanics certificate. A memorial fund has been established in Stevenson's name to further the celebration of diversity and multiculturalism at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring. Contributors should write "David Stevenson Memorial Fund" on their checks. In addition, New Century College and the Department of Public and International Affairs have established the David R. Stevenson Internship Award to recognize George Mason undergraduates who have done outstanding field work in nonprofit studies.
