The Academy: A Summer Program for Serious Young Artists

By Tami Dimock

The Institute of the Arts (IOA) is now taking applications for the Academy, a two-and-a-half-week summer enrichment program described as "a collaborative arts experience at the university level." The Academy offers high school juniors and seniors, as well as elementary school teachers, the chance to work with IOA faculty and guest artists in a supportive environment that encourages personal and artistic growth.

The Academy takes place weekdays, July 8 through 24, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus. A typical day includes integrated arts workshops, artist performances, skills sessions, demonstrations, and collaborative projects. Students who attend the Academy earn three college credits, while participating teachers receive three graduate or recertification credits.

According to Marjorie Summerall, administrator of the Academy, the program offers participants the chance to explore the creative process through many arts disc iplines. "We help young artists tap into areas of artistic energy they may not have explored. For example, musicians get the chance to explore studio art, movement, and theater," she says. As for the elementary school teachers, Summerall says the Academy helps renew their creative energies and teaches them new ways to implement curricula through the arts.

The deadline to submit applications is April 15. All applicants are interviewed, and preference is given to students who demonstrate both intellectual and performance promise in music, dance, theater, and visual and multimedia arts.
