Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution

Cheldelin Leads ICAR

By Diane Britton

Sandra Cheldelin takes the helm of the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR) on Jan. 1, when current director Kevin Clements leaves for London for two years to become secretary-general of International Alert, an international nongovernmental organization that attempts to prevent and resolve genocidal conflicts in Africa, the Caucasus, and Sri Lanka.

Cheldelin, an expert in workplace and organizational conflict, is in her third year at ICAR. She is no stranger to administration, having been the provost at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, before she came to Mason. Cheldelin plans to continue to focus on ICAR's external fund-raising efforts, so that the institute can fund its many working groups on Africa, Asia, and Latin America "to put its theory into practice."

"Seeing how much of ICAR's theory works in practice" was a major reason Clements agreed to take the job with International Alert. Both Clements and Cheldelin plan to establish a partnership between ICAR and International Alert to provide opportunities for ICAR's Ph.D. students to conduct long-term research on international conflicts, and to provide opportunities for students and faculty members to practice conflict prevention and resolution at these sites. "The job at International Alert complements what we're doing at ICAR," Clements says.

Clements explains that his position as secretary-general makes him the major representative for International Alert with the United Nations and the European Union. He will work with these international organizations, as well as with governments, to conceive of and promote ways to prevent and resolve conflict, and he also will manage International Alert's staff of 41. Clements says he is not leaving, but will be "on leave" from ICAR, and plans to return.
