March Is Women's History MonthNational Women's History Month will be celebrated in March with a range of events, including the ninth annual Women's Leadership Conference for College and University Students: Building Bridges, on Saturday, March 27. The monthlong celebration begins March 1 at 3 p.m. with an opening reception at the Women's Studies Research and Resource Center in the Johnson Center. Karen Rosenblum, vice president for University Life, is the speaker. On March 3, Alison Booth, a professor from the University of Virginia, discusses "Who's Who in the History Months" at 6 p.m. in Enterprise Hall; on March 4, Lois Horton of George Mason's Department of Sociology and Anthropology and recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences' scholarly award presents this year's African American faculty lecture at 3 p.m. in the Paul Robeson Room of the Johnson Center; and on March 5, "Women to Women on Racism," a workshop conducted by members of the National Coalition Building Institute, begins at 10 a.m. in the Johnson Center. The following week, two more events are scheduled. The first, set for Tuesday, March 9, at noon, is a panel discussion on "Ten Years of Women's Studies at George Mason: Claiming the Past, Engaging the Future." Two days later, on Thursday, March 11, a brown bag lecture on "Violence Against Women: Changes and Challenges" is being sponsored by George Mason's Office of Sexual Assault Services at noon in the Johnson Center. Washington, D.C., poet Davi Walders will be on campus Wednesday, March 24, at 4:30 p.m. to give a reading. This free event will be held in the Johnson Center. Walders has been published in Ms., Feminist Studies, and Women and Language. The Women's Leadership Conference follows on March 27. Sheila Abdus-Salaam, justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, and Cherie Brown, founder and executive director of the National Coalition Building Institute, are the keynote speakers at the conference, to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room of the Johnson Center. Coalition building on campus, milestones in women's leadership, and sexual harassment will be among the topics discussed at the conference, which is open to the general public. The final event of the month is a panel discussion: "Women Reformer: Dorothy Day and the Catholic Workers Movement." Featuring Deirdre Moloney, professor at Saint Francis College, and cosponsored by United College Ministries, this event begins at 3 p.m. in the Johnson Center. In addition, a weekly video series of films by and about women will be held each Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. in the Johnson Center, and a series of coffeehouse performances will be held on Thursdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center Bistro.
