Leadership Gift Announcements Made at Campaign Kickoff
At the kickoff dinner for major donors and other community leaders on April
6, the following campaign leadership gifts were announced:
- Meadowood Farms Limited Partnership donated a gift of property, valued at
$4 million, for the planned retreat and conference center at Mason Neck, Virginia.
The partnership is comprised of family and employees of Edwin and Helen Lynch,
who donated $6.7 million in funds and property to the Institute for Conflict Analysis
and Resolution for the center in 2000.
- A trust was established by the late Jim McKay and his wife, Ruth, to fund
three major endowments at George Mason. The endowments will underwrite scholarships
for disadvantaged students and student athletes, as well as provide program support
for the Aquatic and Fitness Center on the Fairfax Campus. In recognition, the
indoor competition pool at the center will be named for Jim McKay.
- A $1 million anonymous gift has enabled the Center for History and New Media
to meet a National Endowment for Humanities challenge to create a $2 million endowment.
The center needed to raise $1.5 million to receive a $500,000 NEH grant. The endowment
will support faculty and graduate fellowships and computer resources.
- In order to graduate more nurses to address the region's critical nursing
shortage, the College of Nursing and Health Science has raised $1 million to renovate
and equip its clinical practice laboratories and technology media center. The
amount was raised thanks to a consortium of corporate and individual gifts.
- A gift from Sid and Reva Dewberry, valued at $1 million, will fund the university's
first endowment for student life, further enriching the campus experience. In
addition, their gift will support the creation of a new endowed chair within the
School of Information Technology and Engineering. In recognition, the multipurpose
room in the George W. Johnson Center has been named "Sid and Reva Dewberry Hall."
- University Libraries reached a major milestone - the recent donation of its
one-millionth volume by Daniele Struppa, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The symbolic "volume" is actually comprised of several rare and historic works.
The Daniele C. Struppa Rare Books Collection will be on display next fall
