This year
the ACUI Region 4 Conference will be hosted at George Mason University
November 2-3, for details please go to: http://region4.acui.org/region/04/programs/conference.asp.
Although the conference planning team (CPT) members are throughout
the region, many of the members of the CPT work here at Mason.
Student Centers has initiated a new fee structure to help ensure its resources and facilities can better meet the needs of all of its patrons. With the increased demand upon our facilities and the limited space and resources, we have instituted cancellation, no show, set-up change and damage fees. It is not our desire to levy these fees but rather to encourage spaces to be utilized to their full potential. These fees are to help ensure venues are not sitting empty when another organization could use the venue or to have staff not be able to assist other patrons due to having to reconfigure a room that has already been set. For more information about event planning visit our website at http://studentcenters.gmu.edu. Events not cancelled within three days of the event will incur a late cancellation fee of $75 for each large meeting space and $25 for each small meeting space. If the group is a "no show", a fee of $100 for each large meeting space and $50 for each small meeting space will be incurred. If the group requests a major setup change (from what was originally requested) after the room is set up, it will incur a setup change fee of $100 for each large meeting space and $50 for each small meeting space. Any damages to the space or excessive cleaning required will incur to the group a damage and/or cleanup fee. Groups should be reminded to leave the space as they found it. the Renovation Projects: Past, Present and Future
The Student Centers had a busy
summer undergoing several renovation and improvement projects. Our on-campus commercial bank, now operated by Chevy Chase Bank, underwent extensive renovations. From floor to ceiling, the space has a whole new appearance to match its new name. Carpeting and paint were updated in several spaces including the JC Cinema. There is always a lot of growth and movement on campus and in the student centers. The updated directories have been posted in the buildings or you can check out the online directories at studentcenters.gmu.edu.

Power Outages The temperature fluctuation that has been experienced in the JC and SUB I can be attributed to the construction in the NE sector and connecting the cooling systems. We are working to assure the buildings stay comfortable and the problem should be resolved shortly. Ceiling of Dewberry Carpeting and Painting Projects
Sustainable
development focuses on developing operations that
have social and economic benefits while giving equal
attention to the environmental consequences. Sustainability
seeks to provide financially conservative solutions
that do not negatively impact the environment or
sacrifice the standards and lifestyle of the population.
Implementing sustainable principles has become a
standard in the fields of building development and
operations. One of the simplest and most common sustainable
solutions is compact fluorescent lighting. Although
the initial price can be ten times the cost of a
traditional incandescent bulb, the compact fluorescent
can last ten times longer and use 60 percent less
energy while improving the overall quality of light.
And as this technology advances the costs will subsequently
lower.

or if you have hired a new staff member, please bring
this to their attention. If you are receiving
this e-newsletter, you are on the listserv.

We are pleased to announce that Rachel Harrison is our new Administrative and Maintenance Coordinator for Student Centers. She comes to us with several years of administrative experience in a university facilities setting.
Last
semester new Posting Procedures were implemented in the Student
Centers, namely the Johnson Center and the Student Unions.
These procedures were implemented to address the issues associated
with boards being cluttered with flyers and the covering of
flyers previously posted. The goal was to aid in the efforts
of those wanting to use the posting boards to advertise events
and receive the readability expected after posting. To do this
we limited the number of flyers that could be posted on each
board and therefore distributing the flyers throughout all
possible posting boards instead of duplicating efforts on one
or two boards, resulting in existing postings being covered
by others. These new procedures were not about simply creating
limitations but increasing the real visibility of each posting
and allowing groups to get the most benefit from their efforts.
