Space Utilization

Student Centers has initiated a new fee structure to help ensure its resources and facilities can better meet the needs of all of its patrons. With the increased demand upon our facilities and the limited space and resources, we have instituted cancellation, no show, set-up change and damage fees. It is not our desire to levy these fees but rather to encourage spaces to be utilized to their full potential. These fees are to help ensure venues are not sitting empty when another organization could use the venue or to have staff not be able to assist other patrons due to having to reconfigure a room that has already been set. For more information about event planning visit our website at http://studentcenters.gmu.edu.

Cancellation, No Show, Setup Change and Damage Fees:

Events not cancelled within three days of the event will incur a late cancellation fee of $75 for each large meeting space and $25 for each small meeting space.

If the group is a "no show", a fee of $100 for each large meeting space and $50 for each small meeting space will be incurred.

If the group requests a major setup change (from what was originally requested) after the room is set up, it will incur a setup change fee of $100 for each large meeting space and $50 for each small meeting space.

Any damages to the space or excessive cleaning required will incur to the group a damage and/or cleanup fee. Groups should be reminded to leave the space as they found it. the

Renovation Projects: Past, Present and Future

The Student Centers had a busy summer undergoing several renovation and improvement projects.

George's Restaurant
on the third floor of the Johnson Center received new carpeting and new furniture. It also boasts extended hours so all can stop in and see its new and improved look. Visit http://www.gmu.edu/univ_ctr/services/dining to find out more about Mason’s dining services.

Our on-campus commercial bank, now operated by Chevy Chase Bank, underwent extensive renovations. From floor to ceiling, the space has a whole new appearance to match its new name.

Carpeting and paint were updated in several spaces including the JC Cinema.

There is always a lot of growth and movement on campus and in the student centers. The updated directories have been posted in the buildings or you can check out the online directories at studentcenters.gmu.edu.

Winter Projects

Power Outages

Many of you may have noticed frequent and seemingly random power outages. This is due to an overall larger complication, the repair of which will require the entire JC to be without power over Winter Break. This work is planned to take place from December 26-29.

Heat in the JC and SUB I

The temperature fluctuation that has been experienced in the JC and SUB I can be attributed to the construction in the NE sector and connecting the cooling systems. We are working to assure the buildings stay comfortable and the problem should be resolved shortly.

Ceiling of Dewberry

Renovation work on the food court plumbing is slated for Winter break. The work will cause Dewberry Hall to be off-line for approximately one week during the break.

Carpeting and Painting Projects

Updating the carpeting and paint on several of the 2nd floor office suites is scheduled to take place over Winter break.

Seeking Suggestions for Sustainable Solutions

Sustainable development focuses on developing operations that have social and economic benefits while giving equal attention to the environmental consequences. Sustainability seeks to provide financially conservative solutions that do not negatively impact the environment or sacrifice the standards and lifestyle of the population. Implementing sustainable principles has become a standard in the fields of building development and operations. One of the simplest and most common sustainable solutions is compact fluorescent lighting. Although the initial price can be ten times the cost of a traditional incandescent bulb, the compact fluorescent can last ten times longer and use 60 percent less energy while improving the overall quality of light. And as this technology advances the costs will subsequently lower.

The Student Centers Facilities Maintenance office is seeking suggestions for sustainable solutions. If you have ideas that could potentially benefit our move toward a more sustainable operation or if you have feedback or questions about our current efforts, please email them to jcsufm@gmu.edu.

New Staff Welcomed!

We are pleased to announce that Rachel Harrison is our new Administrative and Maintenance Coordinator for Student Centers. She comes to us with several years of administrative experience in a university facilities setting.

Posting in the Student Centers

Last semester new Posting Procedures were implemented in the Student Centers, namely the Johnson Center and the Student Unions. These procedures were implemented to address the issues associated with boards being cluttered with flyers and the covering of flyers previously posted. The goal was to aid in the efforts of those wanting to use the posting boards to advertise events and receive the readability expected after posting. To do this we limited the number of flyers that could be posted on each board and therefore distributing the flyers throughout all possible posting boards instead of duplicating efforts on one or two boards, resulting in existing postings being covered by others. These new procedures were not about simply creating limitations but increasing the real visibility of each posting and allowing groups to get the most benefit from their efforts.

The campus community is reminded that flyers posted in the Student Centers must be stamped by the JC Information Desk before posting. The only approved posting areas in the Johnson Center are the custom walls directly across from the elevators on the first, second and third floors. There are posting strips in SUB I and bulletin boards in SUBII. Flyers may not be posted in the windows of the entrance doors, on the columns of the building, etc. Please note the following as flyers will be removed from posting boards if they are in violation of the posting procedures: 1) Only one flyer may be posted on each posting board/strip 2) Flyers must be stamped at the JC Information Desk prior to posting 3) Flyers should be posted to cover the posting board and not an existing flyer. In addition, as staff monitors the posting boards, they will also remove as many as possible outdated postings to create additional space throughout the week for new postings.

If you have any questions regarding posting in Mason's Student Centers, please feel free to contact us at 993-2921 or visit us in the Johnson Center, Room 324. You may also visit our website at http://studentcenters.gmu.edu and click on "campus advertising" or "policies/procedures" for more information.
