Upcoming Events Please check back for a list of upcoming events sponsored by ACS's national chapter. Recent Events Event: "Should Progressives Value Property Rights?" -- Held at GMU, Sept. 12, 2005 Professor of Law Steven J. Eagle spoke to members of GMU's American Constitution Society chapter about property rights post-Kelo and Lingle. The discussion approached encouraged students to consider how, in many ways, property rights may be viewed from a progressive perspective. Event: ACS National Convention -- Held in DC, July 29-31, 2005 ACS recently held its national convention, the theme of which was "The Constitution in the 21st Century." The event featured several panel discussions on issues of importance to progressive-minded individuals, and showcased keynote speakers such as Senator Joseph Biden (D - DE) and John Edwards. GMU's own Professor Eagle also spoke on the issue of property rights in lieu of the recent Kelo decision. Event: “The Constitution in 2020?” -- Held at Yale, April 8-10, 2005 “The Constitution in 2020” is the beginning of a progressive response to the conservative vision of the Constitution developed so successfully by the right over the past 25 years. The weekend conference will brought together leading academics, policymakers, and practitioners in American law to discuss their views on a positive, progressive constitutional vision of the future. Event: Don't Ask, Don't Tell & the Solomon Amendment -- Held at GMU, March 2, 2005 The GMU ACS chapter helped sponsor an even focused on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the legal challenges to this policy. Discussion looked at both the court challenges as well as the recent bill aimed at abolishing the law. Event: Critical Voting Rights Issues in Election 2004 -- Held at GMU, Sept. 22, 2004 On Wednesday, September 22nd, the GMU ACS Chapter hosted a panel on voting rights and election issues for 2004. Featured on the panel are election law professor and nationally-recognized voting rights scholar Spencer Overton, as well as Jack Hardin Young representing the D.C. Lawyer's Council and Betty Southard Murphy representing the Republican Lawyer's Council. This panel of experts brought with them years of experience and scholarship in the area of voting rights and election law, and presented an informative and lively discussion of voting issues in the coming national election. First National ACS Convention August 1st to 3rd, 2003: the American Constitution Society held its first national convention. Over 800 people attended the event, which included speeches from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and former Attorney General Janet Reno, as well as numerous other speakers.
