Recruitment
Its recruitment time for Spring 2007 please contact Kelly at kdinwidd@gmu.edu if you are interested in becoming an Alpha Xi Delta sister.
A list of recruitment events coming soon.
What is formal recruitment?
Formal recruitment is for the fall semester.
- Recruitment is a process that women go through if they are interested in joining a Panhellenic Sorority. The process lasts 5 days, but if you have to miss a day for class or an exam, that is an acceptable excuse.
- Day One: usually on a Thursday, is an orientation where Potential New Members (Women going through recruitment) meet their Rho Gammas (Recruitment Counselors) and their recruitment group.
- Day Two: Open House, where PNM's go around to each sorority and have time to get to know a little about all six groups.
- Day Three: Philanthropy Day is where PNM's go around to 4 sororities and learn more about their philanthropy.
- Day Four: Preference Night is where PNM's visit their two favorite sororities and have their final discussion and meeting with those sororities.
- Day Five: If a PNM is matched with a sorority she is given an invitation, or bid, to join that group. She then meets with that chapter later that evening and meets all of her new sisters and New Member Class.
What if I have
class during recruitment?
- Class is always an acceptable excuse. If you have class, still sign up for recruitment. All you have to do is show us your schedule and fill out an absentee form.
How do I register for recruitment?
- There are three ways to register for Fall Formal Recruitment.
- Find a Rho Gamma on Campus, either walking around or at a Kiosk in the JC, and fill out a form.
- Go to the Student Activities office in SUB 1 and fill out a form.
- Print out a Registration form online, and drop it by the Student Activities office or give it to a Rho Gamma.
* Don't forget you must pay your registration fee by the first day of Recruitment. * How much does it cost to go through recruitment?
- Formal Recruitment costs $20.
Why do I have to pay?
- We ask for $20.00 because the University does not provide the Panhellenic Council money for recruitment. Your fee helps cover advertisements such as flyers and registration forms, as well as toiletries, medicine and water available to you throughout the week, just in case you forget something!
What is a Rho Gamma?
- A Rho Gamma is a Recruitment Counselor; known at other schools as a Rho Chi or Rho Delta. She is a member of a GMU sorority, but remains neutral until the last day of Recruitment. Neutrality means she cannot tell you what sorority she is in until you choose what sorority you want to join so that you have an unbiased Greek Woman to go to with questions, comments, and concerns.
Are there any requirements for joining a sorority?
- The only requirements for joining a sorority is that you are an enrolled full time student at GMU and that you are in good standing with the university, in other words, that you have at least a 2.0 GPA.
What should I wear?
- For Orientation wear whatever you want. Open House is Casual, but appropriate. Philanthropy Day is Business Casual. For preference you should wear a dress. Bid Day is Casual.
Should I study the sororities first?
- Studying the Sororities before recruitment is up to you. It may give you some idea as to which philanthropy you like the most, but the rest is very similar. If you do not research the sororities in advance, you will not be at a loss. The sororities are more than prepared to answer all of your questions.
What if I cannot choose who I like the most?
- At first it will be very difficult to choose which sorority you like the most, as they are all exceptional! By the third day you will be surprised how much easier your decision is. If by Preference you simply cannot decide, talk to your Rho Gamma, she is full of endless wisdom! If after all of that you still have no idea who you like the most, what a great predicament to be in! No matter which sorority you are assigned, you will be happy!
What if I go through recruitment, but do not feel ready to join a sorority?
- Some girls go through Recruitment all the way to the last day, and simply do not feel ready to commit to a sorority. It is not a problem. You can choose to drop yourself from recruitment without hurting anyone's feelings. If you decide in the spring or next fall to try again, you are more than welcome!
Still have more questions? Stop by the Student Activities Office in SUB1 on the lower level and ask to speak to a Panhellenic Representative or the Assistant Director for Greek Life, Michelle Guobadia.
