Rush Info
Rushing is an opportunity in which students can actively participate in service
events with Alpha Phi Omega. One can gain a familiarity with the type of work we do and
can decide whether Alpha Phi Omega is the right organization for them. Rush also provides
an opportunity to get to know the members of Alpha Phi Omega. Oftentimes, friendships are
built between brothers and prospective members during the Rush time period
alone. Alpha Phi Omega presents a unique opportunity for George Mason students to
participate in volunteer service while gaining the close friendships felt in
Greek organizations. As a pledge of Alpha Phi Omega, one explores our cardinal principles
of Leadership, Friendship, and Service. For more
information on pledging, you can read Alpha Phi Omega's
National Pledging Standards. Below are some frequently asked questions and
their answers.
Our Next Rush Will Be Fall 2012! Keep looking for updates on our website!
How are you different from traditional fraternities and
sororities?
The main focus of Alpha Phi Omega is community service and being a part of a stong
brotherhood. We are also co-ed.
Who do you accept as a pledge or a member?
Alpha Phi Omega has Open Membership, meaning that we accept any
individual who is willing to put the time and effort into joining our
brotherhood. Selection will never be based on popularity but
on how a person has shown that they are willing to commit to
being a participating member of our organization.
How much does it cost?
Our pledge dues are only $80, and go into paying for pledging materials
and our national fee. We are dedicated to keeping this fee low, and are
quite willing to participate in a payment plan if one discusses it with
our Treasurer. After your pledging semester the dues go down to
$60 a semester.
What kind of time commitment must I make?
Alpha Phi Omega is a time commitment, but if you are willing to put the effort in,
you should have no problem being an active member of the brotherhood. Many of our members
participate in other
activities on campus, work part time, and all are full time students at
this university. While there are requirements to being an active member,
you can always take on leadership oppertunities which will increase your
time commitment.
I work on weekends. Can I still participate?
Many of our larger projects are held on Saturdays and Sundays, but
opportunities are given on weekdays as well. However, our meetings are
on Sunday nights, so you should plan on being free after 5pm on Sundays
to fulfill your requirements as a pledge and an active brother.
What sort of things will I be expected to do as
a pledge of Alpha Phi Omega?
Pledges are expected to complete 15 service hours, attend 4
fellowship events during their pledging period, participate in a
committee, and attend chapter meetings. Pledges are also asked
to attend study hours with their fellow pledges and brothers of the
chapter, as well as get to know the brothers and other pledges of the chapter
by interviewing them. As a pledge
class, pledges are expected to plan a fellowship, a service project, and
a fundraiser. These group efforts help pledges learn what goes into our
fraternity's events and demonstrate that they have the ability to work
as a team to spread the values of Alpha Phi Omega. Each pledge is given
a pin to wear, symbolizing their dedication towards upholding the values
of leadership, friendship, and service.

Do you participate in hazing?
We absolutely do not allow any form of hazing in Alpha Phi Omega. You
will not be asked to do personal favors for our members, and will never
be pressured into doing something you do not want to do. We want to
make the pledging period one that you will enjoy, and want you to feel a
bond with us out of true friendship.
