Pledge Requirements

Once you become invited to become a pledge of Alpha Phi Omega, the pledging period shall be 6-10 weeks of preparation and training in the purposes of Alpha Phi Omega. Pledges must fulfill these requirements during the pledging process:

 

(1) Pledges must exhibit the qualities of Leadership, Friendship and Service

 

(2) Attend all pledge class meetings. If one is to miss a meeting, one must arrange to meet with the Pledge Trainer before the regular meeting time to go over what was missed and to take any missed quizzes.

 

(3) Complete fifteen (15) hours of service. Only six (6) hours will be accepted outside of Alpha Phi Omega planned service events, with the approval of the Service Vice President.

 

(4) Plan, execute, and attend a service project with entire pledge class. Brothers must be invited to attend. Immediate notification must be given to the Service Vice President once the event has been finalized. Special consideration will be given in the case of an emergency if a pledge cannot attend by the President and Pledge Trainer.

 

(5) Plan, execute, and attend a fellowship with entire pledge class. Brothers must be invited to attend. Immediate notification must be given to the Fellowship Vice President once the event has been finalized. Special consideration will be given in the case of an emergency if a pledge cannot attend by the President and Pledge Trainer.

 

(6) Plan, execute, and attend a fundraiser with entire pledge class. Brothers must be invited to attend. Immediate notification must be given to the Treasurer once the event has been finalized. Special consideration will be given in the case of an emergency if a pledge cannot attend by the President and Pledge Trainer.

 

(7) Attend two (2) Executive Board meetings.

 

(8) Attend three (3) General Brother meetings.

 

(9) Attend two (2) Committee meetings of any type.

 

(10) Attend at least four (4) fellowships. The pledge must be present for at least 50% of the fellowship in order for it to count in their requirements.

 

(11) Payment of Pledge Dues to the chapter Treasurere by the deadline stated. The induction fee is non-refundable.

 

(12) Interviews of all pledges and active brothers.

 

(13) Signatures from two (2) associates and/or alumni.

 

(14) Signature from one (1) chapter advisor.

 

(15) Wear pledge pin at all times.

 

(16) Complete ten (10) study hours with the minimum of one (1) hour completed every week.

 

(17) On the day of Big Pageant, the pledges must have 35% of requirements completed before continuing with the pledge program. If this percentage is not met, the pledge will receive a demerit.

 

(18) Produce a pledge class symbol with the entire pledge class and present to the chapter.

 

(19) Create a pledge class role call with the entire pledge class and present to the chapter.

Future Requirements

Once a pledge fulfills his/her requirements, he/she is inducted into the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity as a new brother (neophyte). The following semester, the new brothers must be active brothers. The semesters that follow, the brothers have the option of being associate status. Below are the requirements for each:

 

Active Membership

(1) An Active Member shall be enrolled at George Mason University for the semester in which this status applies.

 

(2) An Active Member shall be current with all dues, fees, and financial obligations with the chapter and the National Fraternity.

 

(3) An Active Member shall have completed at least twenty-five (25) hours of service per semester with a minimum of fifteen (15) hours within the fraternity. All outside hours must be approved by the Service Vice President.

 

(4) An Active Member who fails to attend a service event, which they signed up for, and does not inform the Service Vice President or event chair within twenty-four (24) hours prior to the event shall have one (1) service hour added to their previous twenty-five (25) hours. Special consideration will be given in the case of an emergency by the President and Service Vice President.

 

(5) An Active Member shall, during the rush and pledge period of each semester, be required to attend a minimum of four fellowships. In order to complete the requirement, a Brother must be in attendance for 50% of the duration of the event.

 

(6) An Active Member who fails to attend a fellowship event, which they signed up for, and does not inform the Fellowship Vice President or event chair within twenty-four (24) hours prior to the event shall have one fellowship added to their previous four (4) fellowships.  Special consideration will be given in the case of an emergency by the President and Service Vice President.

 

(7) An Active Member shall serve on a committee each semester.

 

(8) An Active Member shall serve in a leadership role each semester, either by serving as an officer (elected or appointed), or by chairing a chapter project.

 

(9) An Active Member may only miss three meetings per semester and at no time is permitted to miss more than two meetings in a row. Pledge Induction and Brotherhood Initiation Ceremonies are mandatory attendance for every Active Member. Failure to attend a ceremony shall result in two missed meetings.  An unexcused meeting will count as two (2) missed meetings.  Any Active Member who misses three meetings during the semester will be brought before the Executive Board for possible placement on probation.

 

(10) All Active Members must attend the semi-annual chapter planning sessions held by the chapter. Failure to do so will lead to two (2) unexcused absences.

 

(11) All Active Members must attend the Pledge Induction and Brotherhood Initiation ceremonies. Failure to do so will lead to two (2) unexcused absences.

 

Associate Membership

(1) An Associate Member is a non-voting member of the chapter.

 

(2) The chapter may grant Associate Membership status on an Active Member who finds it necessary to cease full involvement in the chapter affairs, and who petitions in writing for such Membership.

 

(3) Associate Membership may only be granted upon those members who have served one semester as an active member.  New members may petition, in writing, for associate status and associate status will be granted upon a majority vote of the Executive board members present.

 

(4) An Associate Member shall pay half the Active Member dues, attend at least two (2) Brother meetings, complete five (5) service hours, and attend one (1) fellowship.  The fellowship must be completed during the pledge period.

 

(5) An Associate Member who fails to attend a service event, which they signed up for, and does not inform the Service Vice President or event chair within twenty-four hours prior to the event shall have one service hour added to their previous 5 hours. Special consideration will be given in the case of an emergency by the President and Service Vice President.

 

(6)  An Associate Member who fails to attend a fellowship event, which they signed up for, and does not inform the Fellowship Vice President or event chair within twenty-four hours prior to the event shall have a fellowship event added to their previous one fellowship required. Special consideration will be given in case of an emergency by the President and Fellowship Vice President.

 

(7) Associate Membership shall be granted for a period of one semester, but members may re-petition each semester that is necessary.

 

(8) The process to petition for Associate Membership is as follows: (1) The Member shall give a written letter stating their reasons for seeking Associate status to the Membership Vice-President.  All letters are due within ten (10) days after the first chapter meeting of the semester. (2) Associate letters will be read to the Executive Board Members present at the Executive Board meeting at which voting will take place on Associate status.  Only the Executive Board Members present will vote on the Member’s status. (3) Members may be present at the Executive Board Meeting at which their Membership status is being discussed to petition the Executive Board personally.

 

(9) Associate Membership shall be granted automatically to those Members who study abroad. These Members shall also be exempt from paying associate dues.
